“Romantic Comedy” as a genre has developed a bit of a bad reputation. Romantic comedies are often thought to be formulaic, idealistic, and pandering. Generally, this genre is considered uninspired and even tedious with regards to its characters and conflicts. Although these claims are not baseless, I would like to present a few romantic comedies that I would consider to be credits to their genre. At their best, romantic comedies are sweet and uplifting stories about relatable ordinary characters finding love. So if you are in the mood for something light, cute and heart-warming, consider the following suggestions!
- 10 Things I Hate About You (Movie)
10 Things I Hate About You is a modern re-telling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew set in a local Seattle high school. The story follows the love lives of two sisters: popular Bianca and ill-tempered Kat. Their father establishes the rule the Bianca isn’t allowed to date until Kat does and the story thus outlines the endeavor to find someone brave enough to date prickly Kat. The hilarious supporting characters and unlikely (but no less adorable) main pairing make this movie a must-see.
- Sixteen Candles (Movie)
Sixteen Candles shares the story of Samantha Baker’s unfortunate 16th birthday. Everyone has forgotten about her special day and she is struggling with a hopeless crush on a senior that doesn’t even know she exists. The simple and universal storyline overcomes generational differences and, even though it was filmed in the 80s, the film is still relevant, relatable, and touching for a modern audience.
3.The Mindy Project (Television Series)
The Mindy Project follows an outspoken and kind of nutty OB/GYN as she tries to find love in New York City. The show outlines both her professional and personal challenges as well as her often-misguided attempts at managing them. Throughout the four seasons, the audience encounters quirky characters and entertaining adventures that make the show engaging and enjoyable.
These are all well-worth checking out, so cozy up and enjoy!
